A word of caution: reading this article on an empty stomach may not be a good idea, as it could potentially make those hunger pangs much, much worse. And of course, the goal here is not to tease or cause pain; instead, it is to share the lifetime’s worth of knowledge I have about this area I know and love so well.
As a native of the Waccamaw Neck and a Realtor for the past 32 years, people are always asking me about my favorite restaurants. For me, it goes without saying that acting as a concierge and a trusted advisor about the area is a part of a successful agent’s job description. It’s always felt like a responsibility for me to match my clients with the right amenities and lifestyle options.
In a way, writing this is a bit like creating an ‘out-of-the-office’ Mariah. I love the idea that I can be a resource for my clients; those who know me best know I’m passionate about helping my clients #LiveLikeALocal. Having this on the site for posterity is a means of ensuring the information is always available, and I’m hoping this can also raise awareness for my fellow local business owners/friends, to facilitate their success into the future.
Recently, I ran an ad in one of my favorite local outlets, Southern Flavor Magazine, promoting one of my ‘secret spots,’ Bistro 217, a collaboration between a fellow local and experienced restauranteur, Anne Hardee, and Chef Adam Kirby that launched in 2004.
I can personally attest to the quality of the dish from the ad and tell you it is just a small example of the quality you will find there:
- Korean Seared Salmon
- Served over Udon Noodles in a Gochujang Dashi broth with tri-colored carrots, edamame, Swamp Lake chanterelles and locally grown pea tendril
If that sounds appealing, then a visit to the Rustic Table should also be on your list, as it’s also a collaboration between Anne and Chef Adam. The focus there is on bringing upscale Southern food, done right and from scratch, in a family-friendly environment that also includes a full bar.
The food at Gio’s Italian Kitchen is also amazing and is one of my and Scott’s favorite date-night spots. Founded in 2014 by brothers/chefs Klodjan and Renato Hoxha, it’s truly a family business as their sister/GM Eri runs the front of the house and their parents are involved in the daily operations. With all the traditional favorites and some tasty new twists, backed by the family’s 15 years of experience in the kitchen, it’s easy to see why Gio’s has been recognized in a variety of publications.
Any list of top Pawleys Island restaurants would be remiss without including Frank’s Restaurant. Located in the historic landmark of Marlow’s Supermarket since 1988, Frank’s is definitely a special occasion-worthy destination and a favorite among the locals. The adjacent, newer Frank’s Outback (established in 1992) has 100 seats outside in a garden setting underneath a canopy of trees; the food at both is a mix of flavors, from the Low Country to the Pacific Rim. I challenge you to visit the website and then decide not to go as I would imagine that’s impossible!
Similarly, the menu items at Austin’s Ocean One are likely to be a significant enticement. Some of my favorites include the Pistachio and Ginger Crusted Grouper, Pan Fried Lobster, Low Country Chicken, and of course, the Beef Tenderloin. And, don’t forget to visit their sister casual, open-air café, Cabana Café. The crabcakes over succotash are unmatched! The fact that you can enjoy all of these wonderful dishes with the ocean as a backdrop only adds to the appeal.
Of course, the flavor of an area doesn’t just come from restaurants or real estate, however. There are so many different lifestyle options here, from golf courses, marinas, and tennis courts, to art galleries, beaches, history, and cultural offerings, that it can be a little overwhelming. Finding the right one can be as simple as connecting with the right person, so why do the legwork yourself?
Similar to real estate, having the right person on your side can be a difference-maker, so if you are interested in more insights on all things Pawleys, make sure to subscribe to the blog here at TheMariahJohnsonGroup.com or just give me a call.
