Your First Stops as a New "Local"

Moving to Georgetown County on the coast of South Carolina, is a new venture filled with wonder and excitement. Located at the center of the stunning Hammock Coast, USA Today named Georgetown “America’s Best Coastal Small Town” due to its “200-year-old homes (more than Charleston, in fact), scenic plantations (and) lots of Southern charm.” A historic community brimming with culture, vibrancy, and hospitality, here are a couple of Georgetown’s must-visit spots that will give you a grasp of the area’s roots and how it became the coveted area it is today.

Brookgreen Gardens, Murrells Inlet

When looking to learn about the region’s distinct art, nature, and history, take a trip to Brookgreen Gardens. This National Historic Landmark is the meeting place of culture and nature, giving visitors a glimpse into the beauty that this community gem holds. Brookgreen offers a daily selection of tours, programs, and exhibits suitable for visitors of all ages, giving them access to the stunning gardens with a guide or the chance to explore them all on their own. Guests can view everything from the figurative sculpture by American artists to flora, fauna, and cultural artifacts of the South Carolina Lowcountry. Brookgreen Gardens is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that collects, conserves, and displays many horticultural, artistic, and additional precious resources, keeping the community aware and open to a lifetime of learning and sharing the area’s culture for generations to come.

Not only is Brookgreen Gardens a haven for various life and art forms, but it is also the hosting site for various events held year-round. The Sacred Vessels and Sailor’s Valentines Exhibit is held at the Noble Gallery until August 5, 2022. Here you can step into local artist Natalie Daise’s world of sculpted gourds and glimpse artistic shell arrangements by Irmgard Cate of Murrells Inlet, viewing creative takes of nature’s everyday Lowcountry treasures. If you’re a fan of birdwatching, you’ll love the chance to grab some coffee and donuts before spotting majestic flyers during the Breakfast with the Birds event in September and October. Keep your eyes open for the Garden’s ever-changing event calendar. Better yet, become a member to gain free access to the year-round exciting and educational events and activities.

The Rice Museum, Historic Georgetown

Entrenched in history, The Rice Museum comprises the Old Market Building, Town Clock, Kaminski Hardware Building, Lafayette Park, and the Rice Museum Herb Garden, each feature possessing its distinct charm. The Old Market Building and Town Clock are the museum’s headquarters and home to its permanent collection of dioramas, maps, paintings, artifacts, and other exhibits that tell the story of rice cultivated in Georgetown County.

The Kaminski Hardware Building is a must-visit as it houses the Maritime Museum Gallery, the Rice Museum Gift Shop, and the Prevost Art Gallery. Sunk in approximately 1730, the Browns Ferry Vessel is a cant-miss exhibit, being the oldest vessel of colonial manufacture on display in America that predates all vessels previously found by 50 years. Stop by the Prevost Art Gallery to view artwork by South Carolina artists and artisans before heading to the gift shop to purchase a unique artisanal piece to take home. Last but not least, head to Lafayette Park and the Rice Museum Herb Garden for a moment of tranquil clarity surrounded by greenery. Once you’ve made your rounds, replenish and relax with a trip to Downtown Georgetown for dining, shopping, and many historical sites.
